The unexpected expat blogger behind GladRiverTrail

Hello, I am Javier
I work as a project manager. I am a parent, and I’m an expatriate living in Madrid, Spain.
A few years back I moved here with my family. What began as a temporary assignment gradually became a new chapter of life abroad.
How It Started
Moving to Spain wasn't part of the long-range plan. Like many expatriate relocations, it started as a job opportunity and soon grew into something much bigger.
The initial months were demanding — new systems, new routines, new expectations. Everyday tasks seemed more complex than they should.
The Adjustment Period
There was culture shock, uncertainty, and lots of learning by doing. But gradually routines took shape. We found places that fit us, met other families, and began building something that felt steady.
Why I Built GladRiverTrail
Most information online was either corporate-level relocation advice or surface-level tourism material. What was missing was an honest, everyday family perspective.
This site exists to bridge that gap — practical guidance grounded in real life in Spain.
What This Website Represents (And Does Not)
This site stands for:
- Hands-on experience from living in Spain
- Centered on family life and daily realities
- Updated whenever something truly changes
This site is NOT:
- not a tourism board resource
- a sponsored review platform
- a generic travel blog
Moving Forward
Our stay in Spain continues, and so does the learning journey. As long as the information remains helpful, I’ll keep documenting what we discover.
If you have questions about family life in Madrid or anywhere in Spain, don't hesitate to contact me.
Best regards,
Javier
